NFL Recap – Week 1

NFL+Recap+-+Week+1

As the first week of NFL wraps up, there were a few surprises, and then some less surprising things we all probably expected…

  • Tom Brady and the Patriots beat the Texans. This makes Brady 57-2 at home against AFC opponents.
  • Odell Beckham Jr. and Julio Jones had equally outstanding individual performances as both the Giants and Falcons drop their season openers.
  •  I’m sure we all expected the Bills to be a below average team this year, but losing the contest 47-3 against the sub-par Ravens isn’t something I saw coming (and no, Lamar Jackson hasn’t taken Joe Flacco’s job yet).
  •  Aaron Rodgers had a stellar performance against the Bears new defense featuring Khalil Mack.
  • Speaking of Aaron Rodgers, he was carted off the field during the first half of their game this weekend. I couldn’t help but thinking about how familiar this scene has become, seeing one of the greatest QB’s of this (and any) generation lay on the field thriving in pain. I’m sure all Packers fans had their dreams crushed but Rodgers did something I’ve never seen before; he returned to the game. That last sentence was dripping with sarcasm by the way. But after returning to the field in the second half he led the Packers to a 1 point victory over their divisional rivals. Rodgers is going to have further evaluation done on his injured left knee.

Now on to the surprising news:

  • Jimmy Garoppolo, had an underwhelming performance against Kirk Cousins and the Vikings. Garoppolo is under a microscope this year having signed a 27.5 million dollar deal for this season. The 49ers  (and Patriots fans) are expecting big things from him this season and throwing 3 INT’s in your season debut isn’t a good way to start!
  • Andrew Luck played football again!!! I know this might be news for most, but Luck was a first round pick that hasn’t been able to play for nearly two seasons. Seeing him healthy enough to go out there and throw 53 passes in his first game back is just as satisfying as it is unexpected. Maybe they’ll win next time.
  •  Patrick Mahomes has kind of flown under the radar for the last year. After Alex Smith left the Chiefs for the Redskins, however, it cleared way for the young quarterback to showcase his talents like he did this past weekend. He threw for 256 yards and 4 TD’s, outperforming the veteran Philip Rivers. The only downside is I kept Mahomes on the bench and started Brady in my fantasy league and I’ll probably lose because of it.

All in all, it was a pretty interesting week 1. Not all of the games are finished just yet though- the Jets will be playing the Lions, then the Rams take on the Raiders for Monday Night Football.
