SoVT Destinations: The Apple Barn

The Apple Barn Country Bake Shop is a huge attraction for the community and tourists during the fall season. It is located at 604 US-7 in Bennington, only a few minutes down the road from campus! The Barn is open Sunday-Saturday from 8:30am-5:00pm, so don’t miss your chance to get there! They sell a variety of baked goods, drinks, apples, and memorabilia. A few of my favorite things to buy at the Apple Barn are their apple cider donuts, apple cider drinks, and their maple ice cream! You can’t go wrong with anything you buy there, especially because most of their items are made right in the shop. There are so many options to choose from, so don’t worry you will fall in love with something there. They have fun activities too- ranging from pick-your-own berries, to fall foliage tours, and many more!

An interesting fact about the Apple Barn orchards is that they were originally established in 1910 by Edward Everett (who happened to be the man that had the mansion built at Southern Vermont College, aptly named the Everett Mansion). Mr. Everett planted thousands of trees including cherries, plums, and quinces on the land that is now Southern Vermont College; as well as 65 varieties of apples! Everett Orchards became the largest privately owned orchard in the world, and even after his passing they are still carrying on his tradition!
