Shires Press Character Teaser Series: Aden Conley

Jose Ferreras presents: Aden Conley, pyrokinetic…

About the Author:

A member of SVC’s Shires Press Series for publishing his first book, Jose Ferreras (Creative Writing, Class of 2017) started writing this six-part series of “character teasers” to give sneak peeks into the supernatural personalities of his novel, tentatively titled Decoded. Jose feels happiest when immersing himself in fantasy and supernatural writing. He hopes that this character teaser series will encourage readers to pick up a copy of his book at Northshire Bookstore when it is officially released in April, 2017.

 Aden Conley

by Jose Ferreras

Aden threw his arms up in front of his face, using his metallic hand to deflect the light that came right for him. The force of it slammed him off his feet and brought him down to the floor. He looked up and watched as the large, faceless being stepped forward, its arm raised as it readied itself to send another beam at the grounded male. The former college student rolled out of the way and jumped back onto his feet, slashing his arm down in the process. He let out an annoyed grunt as fire emitted from his skin to lash out at the beast that pursued him. The spiraling inferno pressed the beast back, giving Aden the chance to make his move. He charged, slashing both arms down this time; another flame ripped out of his skin to push it farther away.

The young male thought about how much things had changed in the past year-and-a-half. The world depended on him now, unlike before when the only thing that was on his mind was finishing school and marrying the girl he loved. He slammed into the monster, but it was ready for him, throwing its arm out to slam him away.

The pyrokinetic was thrown off his feet once more but grounded himself for a backflip, using the momentum to kick the thing away with his feet. He landed gracefully and readied his arms in front of him. Looking around briefly, he scanned the area as his peers fought around him. The field was being flooded by the minions of the Four Horsemen — they were coming in faster and faster. Eventually, the other three beasts would appear to join their brother, but Aden knew that it would only bring him and his friends to fight harder. They would do whatever it took to make sure that the horsemen couldn’t get their hands on the key.
