The Undetermined Accounts

by Takiyah Douglas

Time is an important aspect of reality. It determines the amount of our existence and how much of it we actually value. It’s a constant reminder of the days that went by as you sat in your crappy room, dreaming of another life you didn’t bother to create. Maybe it was your fear of the unknown or just a bunch of obstacles being tossed at your face. Perhaps you had someone standing directly in your way, holding you and your precious time hostage. Whatever it was, you would never be able to prepare for the onslaught of seconds, minutes, hours, weeks, months, and years blurring past you.

And as you got closer and sped faster towards the chilled deep depths, you wished time would slow for you. You didn’t want to lose your existence. You didn’t want to settle when there was so much more you could’ve done. More importantly, you really just didn’t want to fall into those damn frigid waters.

But, oh well, I guess time is up and I have no choice but to embrace whatever hell is waiting below, huh?

“Oh Bob, how could you ever love a monster like me? Just stay away from my hideous face!” Screamed Louise.

Her face wasn’t that bad at all. I would trade with her any day.

“Wait!” Bob grabbed Louise’s arm before she could walk out of his life forever. “Louise, I don’t care if you’re a monster. I will always accept you! Even if your breath reeks and no amount of dental work could help you.. I just want you to be my girl, baby.”

She is so lucky, If there was a way for me to get inside this movie, I would switch places with Louise in a heartbeat.

Fat, inky droplets gathered at the corner of her eyes and she whispered, “Really?”

Bob grinned. “Of course. Now let’s run off into the sunset, babe.”

Louise looked up at Bob, her face filled with bliss. “Yes, let’s my love.” The ending was then followed by some Celine Dion sounding music and a sigh of content from yours truly.

I’m sure life out there isn’t exactly like that. I don’t think background music just appears from nowhere. I also bet Louise could find a damn good surgeon who would fix those teeth right up. What I definitely do know, is that a monster could never live such an existence. We aren’t even suppose to be apart of reality, so why would these two species ever form a loving relationship? I’m sure if someone laid eyes on me, I would have to get ready for one hell of a hunting party. At least I can say I went to one.

I look up at the clock. and saw it was nine fifty in the evening. Just ten minutes remained before He came home. He always returns exactly at 10:00. Though, sometimes I fear He’ll return early and catch me watching television in his study. I’m not sure what would happen after that.

I grabbed the remote and flipped through some channels, trying to find something good to watch. A lot of the time, I would come across channels that were just blank. It was always the same channels too. It could be that He just had terrible cable.

When I did manage to find something, I would watch a lot of teenager stuff. You know, shows with rebellious kids who would sneak out their windows to be with their lovers. I really liked that kind of thing.

If I was to guess, I would say I’m around the age of a teenager. Probably 17. Shows such as Teen Lion was what I was supposed to watch.

I turned the television off and got up from the floor. Before I headed back to my room, I made sure to lock the study behind me.

Flopping down on the bed, I sighed and closed my eyes.

It was such a disappointment having to come back here and have nothing to do. I did learn a few things today, like what a car is. I’ve never had that introduced in my vocabulary before. If I had started watching television in His study a long time ago, I bet I would know everything by now.

I looked up through the bar covered window and listened. It was about that time.

I heard a click and a door swing open. The sound of a pair of boots stomping on the welcome mat echoed all the way from the hall.

I opened my eyes and got out of bed. He was here.
