About the Author: A member of SVC’s Shires Press Series for publishing his first book, Jose Ferreras (Creative Writing, Class of 2017) started writing this six-part series of “character teasers” to give sneak peeks into the supernatural personalities of his novel, tentatively titled Decoded. Jose feels happiest when immersing himself in fantasy and supernatural writing. He hopes that this character teaser series will encourage readers to pick up a copy of his book at Northshire Bookstore when it is officially released in April, 2017.

Arlyn Finley

The four figures moved in closer. Arlyn grabbed hold of Brayleigh and pulled her away with him, knowing that if those things got to them, they wouldn’t survive. As the two ran away from the four beings, one of them suddenly appeared in front of them, blocking the exit. Arlyn came to a stop, eyes wide as he looked into the face of the monster that blocked him.

Grabbing her hand, Arlyn tried to pull Brayleigh away, but was suddenly slapped right off his feet by one of the other beasts. Arlyn hit the ground hard and gasped out in pain – those things were strong. He looked up in time to see the large beasts hovering closer to the redheaded woman. Upon seeing one of them grab for her, he threw his hands up in protest and let out a scream.

Suddenly, he felt, in his gut, something he had never felt before. He felt power. From the ground came a spurt of water, which collided right into the large beast, pushing it away from Brayleigh. Arlyn laid there on the ground, shocked at what he had just witnessed.

Did he just do that?

Slowly, he got up onto his feet and made his way over to the redheaded woman. The beast, enraged after being pushed back, turned its attention onto Arlyn instead. As it hovered towards him, the brunette looked down at his hands; he wondered if he could make the power come back. He threw his hands up – nothing happened. He looked at his hands and sighed, his eyes shut in frustration.

He had to do something.
