Shires Press Character Teaser Series: Leo McGrath

Jose Ferreras presents: Leo McGrath, electrokinetic…

About the Author: A member of SVC’s Shires Press Series for publishing his first book, Jose Ferreras (Creative Writing, Class of 2017) started writing this six-part series of “character teasers” to give sneak peeks into the supernatural personalities of his novel, tentatively titled Decoded. Jose feels happiest when immersing himself in fantasy and supernatural writing. He hopes that this character teaser series will encourage readers to pick up a copy of his book at Northshire Bookstore when it is officially released in April, 2017.

Leo McGrath

by Jose Ferreras

When Leo had woken up this morning, this was not how he’d pictured his day going. Currently, he hovered eight feet in the air, unable to figure out how to get down. He huffed in annoyance, flailing as his friends, who didn’t seem to be in any particular hurry to assist him, watched. Of course, he understood why Arlyn wasn’t going to jump to his rescue, but he couldn’t help but to ask for his help anyways. Finally, Arlyn sighed and moved to try and help the electrokinetic, but before he could get to him, Leo was knocked out of the air by a dark beam of light.

As Leo fell, Alistair (who had been watching from the sidelines) waved his hand, using his telekinetic abilities to slow down Leo’s fall. Once Leo was safely on the floor, he looked around the room, his eyes narrowing into slits: the horsemen had found their way into the base. The blond’s eyes turned a blueish-white as his anger fueled him. He extended his hand out, electric bolts shooting out from it, which collided into one of the four monsters.

Leo jumped up onto his feet as the horrific, faceless figures moved to terrorize the population. He snatched his sword from the ground, twirling it by the hilt, and made his move — this is what they had trained for. The horseman he had attempted to electrocute conjured its own weapon, meeting Leo halfway. The blades met, the strength of the larger being almost knocking him off his feet once more. The two fought, their weapons slamming into one another as Leo tried to hold off the blows. One hit came close, swinging over his head as he ducked underneath it and shot his hand out, hitting the beast with another bolt of electricity.

He jabbed his sword into the horseman’s side, and the beast turned around to slap Leo off his feet. The electrokinetic jumped back and levitated up into the air once more. As the beast tried to grab for him, Leo kicked it in the face and sent another bolt of electricity at him. He couldn’t help it as a smirk graced his features — he was now at an advantage.

Maybe this levitating thing wouldn’t be too bad, after all…
