Have you met Patrick McGovern?

Patrick McGovern (Business Administration, Class of 2018) was born and raised in England. As a Business major, he hopes to coach a soccer team and earn enough money to own his own bar. McGovern came to Southern Vermont College with the opportunity to play basketball at a collegiate level. In his time spent here, he has also found time to run for the track and field team and play soccer. At Congleton High, he had received athletic records, one for track and field in a 200 meter race and the other for basketball as the all-time leading scorer. He had also played soccer for 12 years on and off, eight of those years being with his local club team, Congleton Rovers.

This is McGovern’s first year playing for SVC on the soccer team. Back home he played all five years of high school. About the sport, he said, “I didn’t think I had it in me to keep playing since I took three years off.” He stopped playing soccer to focus on his collegiate basketball career, in which he, with his team, has now won two championship games. Now that he is back playing soccer, he hopes to also win a couple championship games with the team by the end of his college career.

So far, McGovern received Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for the 2016 soccer season. He has put in more effect than you could imagine and on the topic, he said, “I really hate losing; I just want to win.” About his coach, Greg Gilmore (History and Politics, Class of 2011), he informed me, “I think Greg was the guy for the job, he knows the game very well. He is down to earth and easy to get along with.”
