The Moral Legitimacy of America

The Moral Legitimacy of America

Ever think you’re living a huge lie? That the government is just stealing money from you? That the rich will stay rich and the poor stay well…poor? Well step right up and get in line…..American Capitalism at its finest. The fact that some people won’t and don’t understand is that people have agendas that bully the lower class. For people to get an advantage in our economy, in our class system, and in life, they must put down a lower class of people, oppressing them and making their opportunities few and far between.

Honestly, I couldn’t give two flying f*cks who wins this election. Donald Trump is a side show, and an a$$hole, Hillary Clinton is a lifetime politician, whose husband put into place some of the most heinous and grotesque set of laws that rippled through minority engulfed areas. The problem is America is not willing to trust one of these candidates to represent them, and I agree, but the show must go on, so check out these points I’ve made.

I have decided to look at two parts of our economy, our banking and finance system, which I came into caring about after seeing my parents and many others fight through the mortgage crisis, and after multiple times watching the movie The Big Short. I also delve into “The War On Drugs.” It’s rhetoric, plan, and execution has added to mass incarceration in America, mandatory minimums, a deeper black market, and worse race relations for our country, like cutting opportunities through minorities and lower class citizens.

The banking industry has more than done its fair share to become a problem in society. Adding to the collapse in our housing market, banks have kept up their end of totally f’ing people, so when does this stop? Wells Fargo just went through a whole scam where it turns out they’ve been defrauding customers for years, yet former CEO John Stumpf can just walk away with his money and a resignation? That’s why my title is what it is? Where is the fairness? The accountability? Where’s the action. According to politfact, “The state and federal prison population remained fairly stable through the early 1970s, until the war on drugs began. Since then, it has increased sharply every year, particularly when Reagan expanded the policy effort in the 1980s, until about 2010.”

The War on Drugs” is a term used after President Richard Nixon announced it in a 1971 press conference, calling drug abuse “public enemy number one”. The presidency of Ronald Reagan started a long period of increased incarceration. The number of people behind bars for nonviolent drug law offenses increased from 50,000 in 1980 to over 400,000 by 1997. One of Richard Nixon’s top advisers John Ehrlichman said that the war on drugs was created as a political tool to fight minorities and hippies. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people,……”You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities,” Ehrlichman said. “We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

With less than 5 percent of the world’s population but almost 25 percent of incarcerated population of the world, the United States imprisons more people than any other country in the world. A big reason why is misguided drug laws, including mandatory minimum sentencing for drug use. These law and sentencing requirements have made huge disadvantages for people and communities of color. Blacks and Latinos are far more likely to be criminalized for drug law violations than whites. This is a fundamental issue within our country.

The fundamental problem in our banking industry is the way that people in high leverage positions have been able to cause situations of chaos (2007-2008 recession) and not be held responsible in a court of law. What happened in 2007 was the process of bank lenders and other banks loosening restrictions on loans, which simply put means that these loans called Subprime Mortgages evolved into this nasty shit-storm of bad loans and defaults. And when people don’t pay their loans, banks default, and slowly and slowly and slowly, our economy fell in the shitter. In my terms: The Government and Wall Street were trying to open a new way for wealth creation and failed miserably, which always usually comes after a big fallout.

Instead of accepting accountability on Wall Street, we allow blame to be placed on immigrants and poor people. But banks haven’t learned since their previous indiscretions. An article published by the Washington Post reports that “In early September, Wells Fargo was fined $185 million by regulators after it discovered that thousands of employees were setting up unauthorized accounts, including credit cards and checking accounts, that customers had not requested. In some cases, the customers were charged various fees for accounts they did not know existed.”

My view is that we as American Millennials need to understand that we will soon be put in situations where our actions will impact the lives of generations, and that we should leave this Earth better then when we got here. I want to make sure we know that progress should be made.

We should base our feelings on the content of the person’s character, and not the context of their skin.  Racism and hate are blinders to block us from these worldly issues, and the concentration of wealth and power is destroying our middle class, and lower middle class. Look into things, discover your intelligence, f*ck it man, think for yourself.

I think the solution to these problems lies within the national public.  We as a people need to be concerned and have opinions about these things. There is an issue with our country, and it’s because we’re not paying attention.

Stop caring about the Kardashians and start caring about your country and maybe things will start working in your advantage. Take a part in local politics, meet people who have influence in your city and try to make positive change. Don’t be a puppet.
