Like many of my fellow college students, I am at a loss when it comes to what I am going to do after I finish my time here at Southern Vermont College. An option that is often overlooked by students who come here from out-of-state, is actually staying in Vermont. It is a beautiful state with opportunities for people who are willing to work hard, enjoy the beauty, and take advantage of a great location with so many opportunities. Vermont is known for its maple products and has a rich outdoor culture. Also, if you like winter sports, there isn’t a better place to live.

When it comes to job opportunities, another thing to keep in mind is that Vermont has an aging
population. So, there are variety of  business openings for graduates. There is no shortage of businesses for sale, and the Vermont market is one that a young professional could make a difference in. In a big city, it can feel like the only option you have is to settle for whatever entry-level job is available and hope to climb your way to the top. However, in the towns and cities of  Vermont there is less competition, room to grow, and more chances to choose your own path. Vermont was also picked by US News as the second safest state in the country.

So, before you think you have to rush off to a big city after graduation, consider the impact you could have on the Vermont community. For more reasons to consider staying in Vermont after college, read this article by Executive Director of the Bennington Chamber of Commerce, Matt Harrington.
