Shows You Need To Watch On Netflix

13th – This eye-opening documentary sheds a light on the social injustice that is being burdened upon minorities in the correctional systems. The documentary centers around the 13th amendment, which outlawed slavery, but director Ava DuVernay argues that slavery is being sustained through mass incarceration. The film is receiving critical acclaim even early on and this film is something I urge people to watch. The trailer can hook you in easily.

Amanda Knox – This hour-and-a half documentary tells the twisted and frightening story of Amanda Knox, an American college student who was arrested, charged, and acquitted TWICE by Italian courts of murdering her roommate in her Perugia flat. The story unravels the truth and details the trouble with the legal system in Italy, and the way the media vilified her as a person, destroying lives of countless innocent people.

Bob’s Burgers – This animated comedy has five seasons on Netflix and is easily one of the best animated television series out today. The show centers around the Belcher family – Bob, Linda and their three children: Tina, Gene, and Louise. The family runs a burger restaurant. Bob deals with an extremely frustrating competitor and his ridiculous family every episode and the hilarious running comedy makes this an essential Netflix must watch.

ESPN’s 30 for 30 – These hour-long ESPN documentaries account for some of the greatest stories of sports. Stories about Tyson vs. Ali, The Orlando Magic, The Buffalo Bills tragic super bowl losses, and my personal favorite Four Days in October, a story about the improbable Boston Red Sox comeback on the Yankees and eventual World Series Championship, along with other important highlights in time and sports fame. For the avid sports fans, these 30 for 30’s are a must watch.

Friends – This 62-time Emmy nominated television series currently has its entire ten season run on Netflix, and is known for being one of the best written shows ever on television. Personally, I’ve binged through this show about three times. The episodes are about 20 minutes long each and the show is so funny and easy to watch that you don’t even realize that you’re almost done with the show when it’s finished. Friends explores the everyday lives of six, New York City based friends: Chandler, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, and Ross. If you’re looking for a show to watch with a girlfriend or boyfriend for a long weekend and you don’t feel like getting out of bed, don’t look any further, this is the show.

Grey’s Anatomy – I wouldn’t forget about the population of radiologic science and nursing majors around campus. The long-standing hospital show surrounds itself around Dr. Meredith Grey and getting caught up in professional, and personal, quagmires. Currently, the show has 12, long seasons on Netflix, which will be surely added to since the series is still running on television. So shoutout to the nurses; I didn’t forget about you guys.

Luke Cage – Marvel’s new badass is former convict turned super-human, Luke Cage. Following up on the impressive shows, Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Marvel won Comic Con fans over with the trailer for Luke Cage, and they delivered with a real winner again. This show oozes a confidence that is rarely seen in television series today, and they picked the right man to play the lead. Mike Colter is absolutely the best casting choice made since Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. I highly recommend watching this.

The Phenom – This quick movie is something out of left field (no pun intended). The movie more or less is a conversation between two men: one being a baseball prodigy, who for some reason cannot perform on the big stage, and a sports psychologist whose task is to peel back the layers of damages that the prodigy has dealt with over his young life. The story isn’t much about baseball, but more about life dealing with an overwhelming, deadbeat, abusive father. This movie is well made, well acted, and worth a watch.
