In the new Netflix documentary called Amanda Knox, the producers bring us the story of a college student who was accused of the murder of Meredith Kercher. Meredith Kercher was an exchange student from England living in Perugia, Italy, where she shared a house with Amanda Knox, who was an exchange student from Seattle, Washington. Meredith was found dead in her bedroom by Amanda, who was accused of killing her roommate.

The Amanda Knox trial was one of the most popular news stories all over the world back in 2001 when Kercher was found dead. Knox and her boyfriend Rafallae Sollecito were charged and found guilty of murdering Kercher, and years after they were found guilty they won their appeal that ended up releasing them from prison.

In this documentary Knox and her boyfriend Sollecito are given another chance to tell their story about the trial, and what happened. Throughout the entire trial, Knox and Sollecito maintained their innocence, and that they did not kill anyone.

Police said that Knox and Sollecito were acting extremely weird, and bizarre for someone that just found out their roommate/girlfriend’s roommate was found murdered. They were seen kissing right after the police found her body, Knox was seen doing cartwheels outside, and just seemed completely unphased by what was going on around them. DNA evidence was also found on a knife in Sollecito’s home that had Knox’s DNA on the handle of the knife, and Kercher’s DNA on the blade.

Knox claims that she has no idea how the DNA evidence could have been on that knife, and that police were messing with her throughout the trial, trying to emotionally break her. They told her she had HIV, and Knox’s prison diary was leaked to the press, only to find out that she in fact was not HIV positive. Knox and Sollecito also said that police would smack them over,  and over when they would not answer their questions they way they wanted too.

Having watched this documentary, I am left unsure if she really did do it, or not. One part of me thinks that she didn’t do it, and the police framed her and just wanted to close the case, because it was such a popular one all over the world. It appears in the documentary that she may have some kind of a mental disorder, based on the way she talks and her behavior after she found out her roommate was murdered in a very nasty way. If she did have some kind of disorder like autism or asperger’s she may not know how to act in certain social situations.

The other part of me, thinks that maybe she did do it since Knox does seem like she has a mental disability of some kind, and maybe Kercher was making fun of her. Maybe Knox couldn’t take it, and snapped. I am left more confused than ever, and I feel like we will never know if Amanda Knox was really guilty or innocent. Regardless this tragedy can happen to any college student.

For those students who want to study abroad, you really need to be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Things that someone may do at home, and feel completely safe may not be something that is safe in a foreign country (walking home late from a bar for example). If a student is placed in a house where they have roommates from other countries, like Knox did, you should also pay attention to your roommates, and their behaviors, and never fight or make fun of them. If Kercher was making fun of Knox, and Knox did have some kind of mental disorder, Kercher’s death could have been prevented.

I am not saying it was Meredith’s fault for her being murdered, but if someone shared this information with her before she left, she may still be alive today. Students need to keep in mind, that they are in a completely new country, and should be mindful of that, and not fight with their roommates or peers, because you do not know someone’s background, and what they are capable of.
